Grill'd

27 April, 2012

Pete had - Summer Sunset $12.50

Arguably one of Grill’d’s best burgers – the ‘Summer Sunset’ is mouth wateringly delicious and flavoursome mixed with their herb mayo, relish along with the sweet tangy pineapple.  The size of the burger is just perfect and easy to handle plus the price is reasonable.
A must try!

Marina had - Mini Moo Burger

This burger is quite large despite its name and given that it is relatively low in calories it makes for the perfect snack.

A little naughty but very nice

Paul had - Baa Baa

We are back at the place that got us hooked on burgers. Even though it's not a beef burger, for me, the Baa Baa burger has always been the one to beat.
I think it's because the lamb patty is full of flavour making the meat patty the hero ingredient.

The menu promises grass fed lean lamb, avocado, tasty cheese, salad, relish & herbed mayo. With a choice of two buns, my first few visits started with the Panini bun, but after trying the crispy traditional bun with sesame seeds, I’ve never gone back. The flavour of the sesame seeds is a nice addition to the burger.

I have always found the burgers at Grill’d to be consistent, but surprisingly, on this occasion the Baa Baa was a little different. The bun was good as usual, the lamb patty was as tasty as usual, but a little extra lettuce and a little less relish were to the detriment of the burger. The relish normally cuts through the avocado and mayo ensuring the relish is the last thing you taste.

Ok, this burger wasn’t quiet as good as it has been in the past, but it’s still great!

Baa baa Burger at Grill’d

After weeks, maybe I can even say months, of listening to Paul go on and on about the Baa Baa burger at Grill’d, I decided to give it a try & see what all the fuss was about.
Disappointed was my first reaction, actually probably my overall reaction. But maybe that’s due to Paul talking it up so much.
Anyways, so from the name of the burger you can figure out that it was a lamb burger, it had a slice of tasty cheese, salad & herb mayo. The salad turned out to be a single leaf of lettuce – BIG – disappointment. People should know that the right amount lettuce or salad of any kind is very helpful in making a good burger great.
The patty itself wasn’t bad; if anything I would say I enjoyed it. Probably on account of the lamb not having such a strong smell and the herb mayo was definitely the highlight of the burger.
Despite all this, my score for the Baa baa burger is 3 out of 5. It’s probably a little unfair since I’m not a lamb person, but I have no beef with lamb…

Burgerlicious

20 April, 2012

Bostino

Angus Beef, grilled onions, swiss cheese, bacon, tomato, lettuce, avocado, mustard, horseradish, relish, ketchup

Kim says...

We went to Burgerlicious at the Cross today. Out of all the burgers on the menu, the team all ordered the Bostino - an angus beef burger with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado & chilli sauce. The burger normally comes with ketchup (tomato sauce) but I decided to spice it up a little. If you haven’t already picked it up from my last blog, I’m a big fan of chilli. I think it gives things more flavour & generally tastes better.

Anyways, back to today’s burger, I was going to rate it a 4 but after thinking about it and discussing it with fellow colleagues, I had to change my score to a 3 out of 5. When the burger came out, it looked like it had some potential. But once you take a look at the layers that make the burger you realise that there is A LOT of lettuce in the burger. Normally I don’t mind having a lot of lettuce in my burger, truth be told I prefer lettuces over cabbage. But the downside was that it wasn’t cut properly. It was just a large chunk of lettuce lazily thrown into the burger to give it a plumper look.

Wasn’t too thrilled about the avocado in the burger, it tasted cold wedged in between the lettuce & tomato and it did not help that it was just a lump instead of spread out evenly.
Overall I did enjoy my burger with my side of chips & can of coke zero. However, it probably wouldn’t make it on my list of stores to revisit for a burger.

Til next week!

Burgerlicious’ Bosinto could have done with a thicker patty and less lettuce (so as the fillings don’t fall out easily); other than that it was a good burger with a nice mix of horseradish, mustard and tomato sauce that all come together and made the burger tastier. Fairly priced at $11.

Paul says..

I'm starting to miss licensed premises, but it's about the burgers! Back to a licensed burger place next week though.

Burgerlicious has the most appetising burger menu that i have seen to date, well on par with Grill'd. With 11 beef burgers on the menu, it was difficult to decide on one. Somehow, we all managed to choose the Bostino on this occasion.

While the menu sounds gourmet, the presentation of the burgers isn't quite as good as other gourmet burgers that I have experienced, but how does it taste? With the mustard and ketchup coming together, the first bite was just like biting into a hot dog, only the meat was a lot better. Despite the variety of ingredients, the flavours are well balanced and work well together. The burger would benefit from a reduction in the amount of lettuce. The beef patty is good, although smaller than what I have become accustomed to. There is nothing in particular that stands out with this burger, but it does enough to make it a reasonably good burger. I'll be back for the Parezian.

Review to come, but here is a quote -" big shit! It's a good burger, but not as good as one i would cook at home"

And here is the review.
They were not shy with the lettuce on this burger......but it was another story for the avocado which was nowhere to be seen.......sadly the beef was MIA, hidden in a sea of lettuce...send out the search party

Hog's Breath Cafe

Boss Hog Double Burger

1 April, 2012- by Paul

The less I think about this burger the better. I’ve had constant reminders of the burger all afternoon.

With  two huge beef patties and double cheese, it’s a struggle to get through this burger. If it wasn’t for the taste, I would have tried harder. I’m not sure what type of beef is in the Boss Hog, but it’s not great. A bad rissole comes to mind.

The steak sandwich or steak burger would be a much better alternative to this burger.

The Burger Joint - Potts Point

30 March, 2012

Paul had - Bacon & Cheese

We headed to The Burger Joint to try the second of Good Weekends 3 of the best. After experiencing the unique local life on our short walk, we hoped the burger was worth endangering our lives for.

The restaurant is literally a hole in the wall, but it is a comfortable one. We have site of the kitchen and hope our appetites are not ruined by the experience. The kitchen was relatively clean, and if you can overcome the transition between cash handling and the handling of your burger bare handed, you will be fine.

With plenty of options to choose from, I couldn’t go past one of my favourite burgers, the Bacon & Cheese. The burgers are like towers at The Burger Joint and I thought I may struggle to get through my burger, but it was gone in a matter of minutes. The burgers are your traditional style burger, so the bun made up a good portion of the burger. The traditional light and fluffy burger bun can sometimes be detrimental to the flavour of the burger, but not here.  All the flavours come through in this burger.  The patty is thin compared to the gourmet burgers that I have become accustomed to, yet its flavour cuts through the bacon, onion and double slice of cheese. It’s all with a little help from the flavours picked up on the grill I think.

This is a good traditional style burger.

Paul's Score: 3.5

Pete had - Aussie Burger $10.90

The ‘Aussie burger’ at the Burger Joint brings back memories; it was basic, tasty and not too pretentious.  The burger had a nice patty with sautéed onions, beetroot and I was glad to see my egg still had the runny yolk. Patty portion could be slightly bigger for $10.90.

Kim had - Chilli Burger

Here I had the Chili burger, I gave this burger a 3.5 out of 5. I really enjoyed the burger here, the beef paddy was nice and juicy, the sauce was fantastic, my only complaint would be that paddy wasn't thick enough. I would have rated this a 9 if it was double beef paddy burger, but it wasn't so it's a 7. But so far to date, this has been the best burger I've had since we started out tour. Well I guess that concludes my review of the recent burgers I've tried.

Until next time blog fans!

Marina had - Hawaiian Burger

This Chicken Burger was good and although it was not a beef burger I have to say that it was most like the style of burger I enjoy. I would go back to try the Bacon & Cheese burger.

No frills just good burgers.

Moo Gourmet Burgers – Newton

23 March, 2012

Paul had - Beef Avocado & Bacon Burger

With a recommendation in Good Weekend as one of the best, my expectations were high. Moo Gourmet Burgers is a fresh and vibrant place, but most importantly there are plenty of burgers on the menu to choose from.

I went with the Beef Avocado & Bacon Burger with Angus beef, avocado puree, bacon, mixed leaves, tomato, homemade mayo and tomato relish. The burger looked impressive with its fresh ingredients neatly stacked inside a sourdough bun. The first challenge was to work out how to eat it. With the roundish patty, cutting the burger in half wasn’t an option and keeping a tight grip was a must.

The beef was flavoursome and juicy, but after a few bites I found something was amiss. While the meat patty is the core of a burger, what goes on around it contributes to making a burger great. For homemade mayo I was expecting a little more, it lacked flavour, and it wasn’t until the last few bites that the tomato relish came through, but when it did it was great. With its fresh ingredients and quality beef, this is still a good burger.

Paul's Score: 3

Pete had - Big Moo burger

When my ‘Big Moo burger’ arrived my first impression was ‘WOW’ because it definitely lived up to its name, but unfortunately due to the size of the burger it was cumbersome and messy to eat and the other downside was that the mayo was very bland. The adage ‘quality and not quantity’ holds true in this case.

Pete's Score: 2.5

Kim had - Piri Piri Chicken Burger

I decided here that I would try the Piri Piri chicken burger. I gave this burger a 2.5 out of 5. The burger was just sooo...dry. The chicken paddy was just so dry it made it slightly hard to swallow, on top of that, there wasn't anything special about the sauce, if anything, they should have added more sauce just so the burger wasn't so dry, in fact I had to dip it in with some tomato sauce just to make it work. Definitely not a place I would recommend a chicken burger.

Until next time blog fans!

Revolver - Annandale

The Ultimate Cheese Burger

16 March, 2012

Paul says..

Revolver doesn’t specialise in burgers, but after being awarded best burger in the SMH Every Day Eats, we had to give it a try.

We were told by the friendly staff that this was more of a traditional style burger than a gourmet burger. I haven’t had too many traditional burgers with smoked mozzarella and pickled cucumber. The reality is, it is as gourmet as it comes.

The burger was so well presented it was almost a shame to eat it. Surprisingly, I had no urge to throw a pickle on the wall or ceiling.  The pickles and smoked mozzarella really make this burger a great burger.

Paul's Score: 4

Pete says..

The ‘Ultimate cheese burger’ Revolver’s only burger on the menu, which I feel they’ve done an awesome job of it is amazingly simply yet rustic with the smoked mozzarella and the added pickles and a patty that is has equal consistency which isn’t to juicy or dry. For a nice burger which is served with chat potatoes one would not hesitate about paying the $14.50.

Pete's Score: 4

Kim says..

We all had the same burger here, and surprisingly we didn't exactly rate the burger the same. Out of 5 I guess I rate the burger as a 3. Don't get me wrong, it was a great burger, the paddy was really nice, the bread was fresh & the sauce was great. It actually lost points because of the cabbage. I guess common sense would dictate I eat the burger without the cabbage, but then it would have been messy for me to remove the cabbage and it's not really a great burger if you have to add or take some away from it. Besides, it was already hard enough trying to eat the burger as the paddy was pretty fat.

The only burger on the menu and it had way too much frou frou for me. In my opinion the potatoes served on the side stole the show they were delicious.
