Cafe Giulia

Mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato & shredded beetroot

Paul says…

Our friends at The Sydney Magazine rated the Café Giulia’s burger as their number 1 burger, so we had to try it.

The patty on this burger is generous. It’s not the best quality meat, but a few herbs are mixed in to add a little flavour. I can only recall one other burger with mustard. The mayonnaise combined with the mustard to create a mild and pleasant flavour.

This is a good burger, but I can’t agree with the Sydney Magazine and put it at the top of my list. A better quality meat patty or the added bacon and egg (like the Sydney Mag review) would push this burger closer to the top.  Having said that, at $10.90 it is good value compared to other burgers out there, and the addition of the bacon and egg will only set you back an extra $1.

Paul’s score: 4/5

David our guest reviewer says…

It's easy to miss Cafe Giulia when you're driving down Abercrombie St. Plenty of people obviously have the hang of it, though and as i stepped over the very classy metal sign laid into the concrete floor  i was met by a wall of people. They were digging into delicious-looking food from the open kitchen that stretches half the length of this cafe.
The friendly staff brought five burgers to our table in quick time. The plain burger ($10.90) is served on a plate with an unnecessary leaf salad on the side. The burger is heavy in the hand and very attractive. The tomato was cut about 8mm thick - well over my tolerance of 5mm maximum. Some people say eating a good burger is like making love to a beautiful woman... at Cafe Giulia it is this way. I almost felt like there should be a lace curtain around the table so I could have some quite time: just me and the burger. The burger is quite big and prone to leakage. Not like you need a shower afterwards but it must be handled with care. The flavours are good with perhaps the dominant one being mustard (something missing in too many burgers I have tried). The beef pattie was a good one, big, but could have tasted beefier. After it was all over i felt satisfied and not guilty at all.
On the side we had some very good chips that screamed of home made by mum. Hand cut and with the peel on, just the way it should be. They could have been crunchier but they are still better than most around. The coffee (long black) was good but not great. The flavour was excellent but the crema was a let down. No curtain required.
David’s score: 3.5 out of 5.

Pete says…
Today we visited Café Giulia in Chippendale where I ordered their ‘Hamburger’ with grilled beef, lettuce, cheese, marinated beetroot and mustard.
The pattie was juicy but not to the extent that it made the buns soggy and the size of the pattie was good.
Something I thought they could have added was some tomato sauce just to balance the mustard; apart from that the burger was quite enjoyable, considering I divulged it in no time at all!
I also felt that it was value for money for $10.90.
Pete’s Score: 4/5

I wasn’t all that impressed with my burger, I ordered my burger with the extra egg & bacon (extra $1). It was probably a big mistake because it just made my burger all the harder to eat, especially with all the sauce & juice from the burger dripping down my hands. I’m just glad Paul didn’t take that particular moment to snap a photo!

I will say it was a good burger, definitely better than most places – but I just felt there was something missing. It could have been the layout of the burger, with so much sauce dripping everywhere I was more focused on not getting food on my clothes than the taste. Or maybe it was the high expectations I had in coming here.
After reading the review in The Sydney Magazine I was eager to try this burger. But I guess like all things when you expect too much you often get disappointed.

If you’re in the area, I say give it a try. However, if you’re not, don’t go out of your way.

My score: 3.5 out of 5

Until next time!

Beef Burger
W beetroot relish, gherkins, cheddar, aioli and a serving of chips. $16

Kims says..

Well, the visit to this place was definitely a mistake and in more ways than one... To start off with, we actually planned on going to the Grounds in Alexandria, but that’s another story, 2nd, looking for parking around Alexandria is a real pain in the butt…even if I’m not driving. Talking about driving, Paul, going around a round about 20 times is not fun unless we were playing corners!

So back to the burger, as mentioned we planned on going to the Grounds, but ended up at 4143 by mistake…the signs were misleading, they had the sign up for the Grounds, so Marina & I thought we were in the right place. It wasn’t until we had ordered that we realised it was the wrong place…

So anyways, it was too late to leave, so we patiently waited for our burger to arrive.

Let me say that the burger LOOKED great. But looks can be deceiving! The bun, where the beetroot wasn’t soaked through was hard as, I had to break my bun & eat only the top portion. The beef patty was horrible. No taste, it was like they just grab a slab of meat & tossed it onto the grill. Here is an after shot of what’s left of my burger…

Score: 1 out of 5

Kim had...
The South American $15 (eat in)
Spiced minced beef, Argentinean chimichurri sauce, jalapenos, onion and sweet corn relis

Well this review is long overdue, we had the burger about 2 weeks ago, but due to the demands of work, I kept putting it off. The store is located inside Westfields so it does get really busy during lunch time, so it pays to pay the extra $2 to get a seat.

Anyways, after our long walk from the office (about 25mins walk), we happily sat down & ordered our meals.

I got the South American burger. You’d think that after 2 weeks I’d probably forget what the burger tasted like, but that’s not the case. The burger was actually really good, beef patty was a fairly decent size, cooked well, the sauce was fantastic and it was definitely something different with the sweet corn in my burger. I don’t remember tasting the jalapenos in my burger so I am a little disappointed with that.

Overall I’d say it was a great burger.

I think Paul enjoyed his burger – picture inserted below (unless Paul went in & removed it…)

Score 4 out of 5
Last week’s burger review will also be up shortly =)

The Federation Burger ($18 dine in)
Seasoned angus beef pattie with tomato relish, tomates, lettuce, aged cheddar, fried egg, bacon sauteed onion and aioli.

This burger has a serious slab of beef, and it's of a good quality. It's cooked well and ingredients are fresh. You could be overwhelmed by the number of different flavours going on, but they work reasonably well together. A little extra tomato relish would have been more to my liking.

We just rate the taste and quality of the burger at the The Sydney Burger Blog, but the extra $2 for dining in is good value in this busy food court.

Paul's score: 3.5

Pete had...

Double Cheese & Bacon

Next stop on our burger blog tour saw us at Charlie and Co Westfield Sydney where I decided to order ‘The double Cheese and Bacon’, which consisted of ground angus beef pattie with double melted cheddar cheese, smoked bacon and tomato sauce on a glazed sesame seed bun.
First impressions of the burger looked good and when I took my first bite, it lived up to my expectations of what a good bacon & cheese burger ought to be. Consistency of the pattie was perfectly moist; the smoky bacon gave it a great flavour along with the melted cheddar cheese, but the tomato sauce was slightly bland and could have done with a bit more taste. Or could it be that Charlie & Co deliberately did that to try and over power the taste of the other ingredients – I wonder?

Being a premium top notch burger establishment the price of $14 I think was considered reasonable, but if you wanted to dine in be prepared to pay an extra $2 for the privilege.

Very happy!

Pyrmont Bridge Hotel...part 2

Kim says....

PBH Beef burger with the lot $14
Beef patty, lettuce, tomato, sautéed onions, bacon, egg & cheese

Well it was just Marina & I today since both Paul & Pete are away on leave (lazy bums). So without one of them to drive us around we chose the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel since it’s within walking distance of the office.

I really liked my burger today; it had nice thick patty, cooked well – so not dry or under cooked and no burnt parts – bacon & egg, sautéed onions on a lightly buttered bun. I think it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a burger without having to think about what I’d write about is as I am eating the burger.

I did struggle a bit to finish my burger today (because it was massive) and I had to leave most of my chips untouched.

Even now, an hour after my meal I still feel full – not the bad full where you feel disgusted at yourself for having forced yourself to eat so much crap full, but the content kind of full where you know it was a good meal and you'd eat more if you could kind of full, not sure if I’ll be able to have dinner tonight…

Overall I thought it was a great burger. Definitely wouldn’t mind eating here again and it’s a good feed for $14.

My score: 4 out of 5.

Paul recently did an independent review of the hotel’s burger before as well so if you are thinking how come we went back here, it’s because Marina & I have not actually reviewed this place before.

Until next time!

Green Park Hotel powered by The Burger Joint

Green Park Hotel burgers made by The Burger Joint Darlinghurst!

360 Victoria Street  Darlinghurst NSW 2010

Kim had...

The Mexican Burger $12
Chicken, lettuce, tomato, salsa, guacamole, jalapeños and melted cheese

Well we had planned on eating at The Burger Man but what a disappointment that turned out to be! We rocked up there only to find they no longer exist. So we took a tour through Darlinghurst & got told by a few of the locals to try out the burger joint.
Yes we have been to the burger joint before, but it was the branch down at Potts Point, so wasn’t too keen on eating at another one BUT it seems that we couldn’t escape them today.

We entered the Green Park Hotel under the impression that they would actually be making their own burgers. However, upon seeing their menu Paul noticed that they have the burger joint’s burger menu. We decided to stay & eat there since we were all hungry and didn’t really want to walk around anymore looking for another burger place.

I decided on the Mexican chicken burger today. The chicken was a little bit dry, but the salsa mixed with the guacamole actually made up for it and after a few bites you don’t even realise it anymore as the sauce has had time to seep into the meat. The jalapeños of course made all the difference for me since it gives it the burger a spicy flavour (which I like).

I actually think this burger had more of a chili taste to it then the chili beef patty burger (even though their menu advertisers it as being very hot). Although it could just be the jalapenos batch they used was hotter than normal. I would have really loved it if they made the Mexican burger with beef instead of chicken!

My score for this burger 3.5 out of 5

Pete & Paul had...

CLASSIC 100% BEEF BURGER WITH SAUTÉ ONION - $9
tomato, lettuce, saute onion

Pete says...

Our quest for the next burger place lead us to Darlinghurst at what we thought would be the ‘Burgerman’ but to our surprise it no longer there. After contemplating where to go next we ended up at Green Park Hotel Darlinghurst which had the ‘The Burger Joint’ burgers on their menu – interesting…
This time I decided to go for the ‘Classic Burger’ with sautéed onions, lettuce, tomato, beef patty with good old tomato sauce on a nice soft bun - which was delicious. Back in March we visited ‘The Burger Joint’ in Potts Point and I’d have to say my comments before and now still stands, with the exception that I’ll give it an extra half a point for a bloody good tasting simple burger.

Pete’s score 3.5

Paul says...

Now we know why people like the burgers at the Green Park Hotel. The Burger Joint has very limited seating, and they are not licensed, so delivery to the Green Park Hotel is a great idea. The Burger Joint is only a short walk away, so delivery is fast.

As the name suggests, this is a classic burger. The sauce has a very subtle flavour, so subtle that i'm not sure there is any. Sauce or not, their isn't much distraction from the smokey bbq flavour of the patty. It was cooked perfectly.

I didn't want to stop eating this burger.

Paul's score: 3.5
